Yuvraj Singh Joins Delhi Capitals as Assistant and Batting Coach for IPL 2027
Yuvraj Singh is stepping into the dugout. Delhi Capitals on Tuesday appointed the former India all-rounder as their assistant and batting coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League season, marking his first formal coaching role in professional cricket.
The 44-year-old will work alongside Sourav Ganguly, who was recently named the franchise's head coach, reuniting two of the defining figures of India's early-2000s white-ball revival.
From mentor to coach
Yuvraj has been a coach in all but title for several years. He is widely credited with shaping the batting of some of India's brightest young players, including Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh, all of whom have spoken about the time he spent working on their games. Sharma, in particular, has developed into one of the most destructive openers in T20 cricket.
The Capitals role formalises that work and gives Yuvraj direct responsibility for a full IPL batting group for the first time.
In a statement released by the franchise, Yuvraj said he was excited to begin a new chapter, pointing to his old association with the team and his familiarity with its owners. He said he was looking forward to teaming up with Ganguly, this time as coaches rather than teammates, and called coaching something he is passionate about.
Delhi Capitals chairman Parth Jindal described Yuvraj as one of Indian cricket's greatest match-winners.
A return to Delhi
The appointment also brings Yuvraj back to a franchise he once played for. In the 2015 auction, the team, then known as Delhi Daredevils, signed him for Rs 16 crore, at the time the highest price ever paid for a player in IPL history. He played all 14 of the team's matches that season.
Across his international career, Yuvraj played 40 Tests, 304 ODIs and 58 T20Is. He was a key figure in India's 2007 T20 World Cup triumph, when he famously hit six sixes in an over, and was Player of the Tournament in the 2011 ODI World Cup.
What it means for Delhi Capitals
With Ganguly and now Yuvraj in place, the franchise has assembled a high-profile, Indian-led coaching setup heading into the 2027 season. Pairing Ganguly's leadership experience with Yuvraj's hands-on work with young batters gives the team two high-profile voices who know the domestic talent pool closely, a useful asset ahead of player retentions and the auction.
How quickly a celebrated player adapts to the very different demands of coaching, from match planning to managing a large squad over a two-month tournament, will become clearer once the season gets underway.
