Shubman Gill's 223 Not Out Powers India to Record 406 Chase Against West Indies in Guwahati

West Indies posted the highest total in their one-day history on Wednesday night and still lost with more than six overs to spare. Shubman Gill made sure of that, carrying his bat for 223 off 133 balls as India hunted down 406 in just 43.3 overs at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati to win by eight wickets and wrap up the three-match series 2-0.

A double century in 117 balls

Gill reached 200 off only 117 deliveries, the quickest double hundred in men's ODI history, beating the 126-ball mark set by Ishan Kishan against Bangladesh in 2022. His hundred came up in 62 balls, the fastest by an Indian captain in the format, and he went from 100 to 150 at such a pace that he got there in 89 balls, also an Indian record.

By the end he had struck 26 fours and eight sixes at a strike rate above 167. Only Rohit Sharma's 264 and Martin Guptill's 237 not out rank higher among individual ODI scores. The knock is also the best by an Indian captain, overtaking Virender Sehwag's 219 against the same opponents in 2011, and it makes Gill only the second batter after Glenn Maxwell to score an ODI double hundred in a chase.

It was his second double century in ODIs, placing him alongside Rohit as the only players with more than one. Gill had already scored a hundred in the series opener, when Virat Kohli's 55th ODI century set up victory (see our earlier coverage).

The Rohit partnership

Rohit set the tone at the other end with 101 off 75 balls, including six sixes, and the pair put on 255 for the first wicket before he fell. Kohli chipped in with a brisk 29 off 19, and Ruturaj Gaikwad finished unbeaten on 31 as India closed on 406 for 2.

The result is India's highest successful chase in ODIs and the second-highest by any team in the format, behind only South Africa's famous 438 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.

Three West Indies centuries in vain

The visitors had every reason to believe 405 for 7 would be enough after India chose to field. Opener John Campbell hammered 101 off 68 balls, Shai Hope made a composed 104 off 94, and Amir Jangoo tore into the bowling for 114 off 77. It was the first time West Indies had passed 400 in a one-day international.

India's attack had a rough evening. Kuldeep Yadav was the most economical of the frontline options with 2 for 65, while Ravindra Jadeja (2 for 75) and Gurnoor Brar (2 for 96) were both expensive. Debutant Auqib Nabi finished wicketless after conceding 84 in 8.5 overs, a harsh introduction to international cricket on a surface that gave bowlers almost nothing.

Gill's golden year

The innings extends a remarkable run for Gill in 2026. He now has 894 ODI runs this year from 10 innings at an average above 127, and his career tally stands at 3,712 runs from 68 innings at 65.12, with 11 hundreds.

With the series decided, India's selectors have room to rotate for the third and final ODI, and the bowling group will want a sharper outing after conceding more than 400 on home soil.
