Mumbai Indians Hand Kieron Pollard the Head Coach Job a Week After Jayawardene's Exit
Mumbai Indians have looked inside the dressing room for their next head coach. On Saturday morning the five-time IPL champions named Kieron Pollard to lead the coaching staff for the 2027 season. He moves up from batting coach to replace Mahela Jayawardene, who left the role on October 17.
Coming just seven days after Jayawardene's exit, the decision ends speculation over a list of outside candidates. Reports earlier in the week had linked the franchise to names including Michael Hussey, Aaron Finch, Eoin Morgan, Mark Boucher and Adrian Birrell. In the end MI kept the job within the family, as they have often done with key roles.
Why the job came open
Jayawardene's departure followed one of the worst seasons in the franchise's history. Mumbai finished ninth in IPL 2026, winning only four of their 14 league matches, and missed the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. The Sri Lankan had won three titles in his first stint as head coach, in 2017, 2019 and 2020. His return to the role did not bring the same results, and the two sides agreed to part ways after a decade-long association.
So Pollard takes over a side in need of a reset rather than a fine-tune. The 2027 season will also be the first big test of the squad-building choices MI make between now and the next auction cycle.
A franchise man through and through
Pollard has been with Mumbai since 2010, when he joined as a 22-year-old. His numbers explain why he is so central to the club's story. He played 189 IPL matches for MI and scored 3,412 runs at a strike rate above 147, with 223 sixes and 16 fifties. He also took 69 wickets with his medium pace. He was a fixture in all five of the franchise's title wins between 2013 and 2020, often as the finisher who turned close chases.
After his playing days ended he moved straight into MI's coaching setup as batting coach. That gives him a working knowledge of the current squad, the support staff and the team's scouting network.
Co-owner Nita Ambani said Pollard had become part of the MI family over 16 years, and that she was confident he would bring the same commitment to the head coach role. Pollard called the appointment an honour. He thanked Nita and Akash Ambani and said his focus would be on developing young talent and building on the team's record.
What it means for MI
Promoting from within has clear upsides. Pollard needs no time to learn the franchise's culture, and he has the respect of senior players he once shared a dressing room with. The risk is the reverse side of that. MI have just had a season bad enough to cost a three-time title-winning coach his job, and an insider may be less inclined to make hard calls on familiar faces.
Pollard has also never been the top coach of a side at this level, although he has held leadership roles as a captain and as a coach within the MI network. How quickly he settles on a support staff, and whether he is given a free hand on retentions, will be the first signs of how much change MI really intend.
For Mumbai fans, the appointment at least brings clarity well before the next season. The bigger question, whether a franchise legend can turn a ninth-place team back into a contender, will only be answered once IPL 2027 gets underway.
