Welspun Corp Wins Rs 5,500 Crore US Gas Pipe Order Tied to a Hyperscaler Data Centre, Order Book Hits Record $5.25 Billion

Welspun Corp has added another large American contract to its books, and this one comes with a link to the artificial intelligence boom. The pipe maker said in an exchange filing on Friday that its US subsidiary, Welspun Tubular LLC, has won an order worth about Rs 5,500 crore from a major US midstream company to supply coated line pipes for a natural gas pipeline in the Permian region.

The pipeline's anchor customer is a data centre complex operated by one of the world's top-tier hyperscalers, the company said. It did not name the midstream operator, the hyperscaler or the capacity of the pipeline.

A record order book, but a long runway

The win takes Welspun's global order book to $5.25 billion, or roughly Rs 50,000 crore, the highest in the company's history. The pipes will be made at its US facility and supplied during FY29, the financial year that runs from April 2028 to March 2029.

That timeline is the key caveat for investors. Revenue from the contract will be booked as the project hits milestones, so it will not show up in earnings for at least another year and a half. What the order does provide is visibility: a large part of Welspun's US capacity now looks spoken for well into the next two financial years.

Third big US win in three months

Friday's contract is the latest in a run of American orders. In August, Welspun announced its largest-ever single order, worth about $1.8 billion, for pipe supplies from its US plant, scheduled for execution across FY28 and FY29. In September, Welspun Tubular secured a roughly $412.5 million order for high-frequency induction welded pipes to be made at its upgraded Little Rock, Arkansas facility. Its Saudi arm separately won a Rs 2,000 crore Aramco pipe order around the same time.

Why data centres matter to a pipe maker

The order shows how the AI build-out is reaching well beyond chips and servers. Large data centres need reliable, round-the-clock power, and in the US a growing share of new capacity is being built around gas-fired generation located close to the server campuses. That requires new gas pipelines, often from the Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico, the country's most productive oil and gas region.

For Welspun, whose recent US orders are all being executed from its American plants, this demand offers a second growth engine alongside traditional oil and gas transmission work.

Market shrugs, for now

The stock did not celebrate. Welspun Corp shares fell about 3.2% to Rs 2,365.50 in morning trade, against a previous close of Rs 2,444.20, as the broader market slid on a surge in Brent crude above $114 a barrel. The fall suggests the order was read against a nervous market backdrop rather than as a reason to buy on its own.

The more important questions for the coming quarters are about execution: whether Welspun can deliver a much larger US order book on schedule, hold margins as steel and coating costs move, and keep winning work as US pipeline spending responds to energy demand from data centres.
