PhysicsWallah, Groww, Rubicon Research See Over Rs 4,400 Crore in Block Deals on Dalal Street
Dalal Street saw a burst of large ownership changes on Wednesday, with five separate block deals worth a combined value of more than Rs 6,000 crore changing hands across newly listed and established companies.
The biggest moves
Edtech company PhysicsWallah saw roughly 4.67 crore shares, amounting to about 1.6 per cent of its equity, change hands in a block deal worth close to Rs 550 crore. The stock climbed more than 3 per cent following the trade.
Billionbrains Garage Ventures, the parent company of investment platform Groww, saw about 12.74 crore shares, or roughly 2.1 per cent of its equity, worth close to Rs 2,500 crore traded in block deals during the session, making it the largest single transaction of the day by value.
Pharmaceutical ingredients maker Viyash Scientific saw an even larger proportional stake move, with about 3 crore shares, representing more than 10 per cent of its equity, worth an estimated Rs 1,390 crore changing hands.
Drug maker Rubicon Research also featured in the day's activity, with roughly 1.3 crore shares, or about 7.85 per cent of its equity, traded through the block deal window.
Rounding out the day's big trades, infrastructure company Welspun Corp saw its chief executive and promoter group sell around 2.4 per cent of the company through a block deal worth approximately Rs 1,433 crore, sending the stock down as much as 6 per cent as the market digested the large promoter sale.
What it signals
Block deals allow large blocks of shares to be transacted directly between buyers and sellers in a separate trading window, letting institutional investors, promoters and early backers exit or adjust sizeable positions without disrupting the regular order book. Wednesday's cluster of large trades touched a mix of recently listed, high-growth companies such as PhysicsWallah, Groww's parent and Rubicon Research, alongside more established names, suggesting continued portfolio rebalancing by institutional investors even as headline indices had a choppy session.
The scale of trading in newer listings such as PhysicsWallah and Groww's parent also points to growing investor appetite to take positions, or lock in gains, in India's expanding pool of recently listed consumer-tech and financial-services companies. Analysts tracking the space note that block deal activity of this size, spread across multiple stocks in a single session, is often read as a sign of active repositioning by domestic and foreign institutional investors ahead of upcoming earnings and global macro events, including US inflation data and Nvidia's quarterly results due later in the week.
While block deals do not always signal a change in company fundamentals, the scale of Wednesday's activity, cutting across sectors from edtech to pharmaceuticals to fintech, made it one of the more closely watched trading sessions of the week for market participants tracking ownership shifts in India's newer listed companies.
