Tata Elxsi Q2: Margin Widens to 21.9% as Profit Holds at Rs 170 Crore
Tata Elxsi delivered a quarter of two halves on Tuesday evening. The design and engineering services company grew revenue at a healthy clip and widened its operating margin, but its bottom line barely moved from the previous quarter.
For the July-September quarter (Q2 FY27), revenue from operations came in at Rs 1,055.66 crore, up 15% from Rs 918.10 crore a year earlier and 3.4% higher than the Rs 1,021.11 crore reported in the June quarter. Net profit was Rs 170.30 crore, about 10% above the Rs 154.82 crore of Q2 FY26 but marginally below the Rs 170.60 crore of Q1 FY27.
Margin up, profit flat
The more encouraging number sits in the middle of the income statement. EBITDA rose 7.1% sequentially to Rs 231.4 crore, taking the EBITDA margin to 21.9%, an improvement of roughly 70 basis points over the June quarter. The company credited operational efficiencies for the gain, which came in a quarter when it rolled out salary revisions across its workforce.
So why did profit not follow? Total expenses climbed to Rs 851.47 crore from Rs 830.11 crore in Q1, and the tax bill rose to Rs 68.80 crore. Profit before tax increased 2.9% sequentially to Rs 239.10 crore, but those gains were absorbed further down the line. Earnings per share stood at Rs 27.34, against Rs 24.85 a year ago.
For the first half of FY27, revenue grew 15% to Rs 2,076.76 crore and net profit rose 14% to Rs 340.90 crore.
Where the growth came from
All three of Tata Elxsi's main verticals grew in constant-currency terms:
- Transportation, which makes up more than half of the software development and services segment, grew 2% quarter on quarter.
- Media and communications grew 3.4%, helped by ramp-ups with large customers.
- Healthcare and life sciences grew 3.5%.
The software development and services segment brought in Rs 1,027.87 crore during the quarter, while system integration and support contributed Rs 27.79 crore.
Deal wins with an AI tilt
The company highlighted a multi-year engagement with an unnamed global carmaker to build a cloud-based telematics and connected-vehicle platform. In media, it won a mandate from a global technology firm to build a multilingual, generative AI-based virtual assistant. In healthcare, a renal-care company has asked it to re-engineer a next-generation home dialysis system, covering everything from user experience and electronics to regulatory compliance.
Tata Elxsi also pointed to an early-stage investment in Silicon Valley-based KAVIA AI, extending a partnership that started in July 2025 and focuses on AI-assisted modernisation of complex software systems. Separately, it is working with Sarla Aviation on an electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft. None of these contracts came with disclosed values.
Why it matters
Tata Elxsi is one of the more specialised names in Indian IT, earning most of its money from product engineering for automakers, broadcasters and medical-device makers rather than from traditional outsourcing. That makes it a useful read on how global R&D budgets are holding up. A 15% annual revenue rise and a wider margin suggest demand for engineering work, particularly around software-defined vehicles and AI features, remains intact.
The open question for the second half is whether the margin gain can survive the full-year impact of wage hikes, and whether this quarter's AI and connected-vehicle wins scale into meaningful revenue. Statutory auditors B S R & Co. issued an unmodified opinion on the audited results, and the company reported no exceptional items.
