Pine Labs Q2 Profit Rises Over 6x to Rs 38.6 Crore as Costs Grow Slower Than 24% Revenue Jump

Pine Labs, the merchant payments and card-issuing technology company, reported its September-quarter results on Thursday, October 29. The numbers showed a business that is finally turning revenue growth into meaningful profit. Consolidated profit after tax for Q2 FY27 rose to Rs 38.6 crore, more than six times the Rs 6 crore it earned a year earlier. Profit also nearly doubled from Rs 19.6 crore in the June quarter.

The headline numbers

Revenue from operations rose 24% from a year earlier to Rs 806.2 crore, up from Rs 649.9 crore. It was also 9% higher than the previous quarter. Adding about Rs 25.6 crore of other income, total income came to Rs 831.7 crore.

For the first half of FY27, revenue was Rs 1,543 crore and profit was Rs 58.1 crore, compared with just Rs 10.8 crore in the same half last year. Earnings per share for the quarter were Rs 0.33, against Rs 0.06 a year ago.

Why profit jumped faster than sales

The key detail is in the cost line. Total expenses rose about 16% to Rs 770.4 crore, well below the 24% revenue growth. That gap is called operating leverage. Once a platform's fixed costs are covered, each extra rupee of revenue adds more to profit.

The company's own measure of operating profit tells the same story. Adjusted EBITDA rose 27% to about Rs 155 crore, giving a margin of 19.2%. Operating cash flow doubled to about Rs 350 crore. The company ended September with net cash of about Rs 2,345 crore, so it is not relying on borrowing to fund growth.

There is a caution here too. Profit is still under 5% of revenue, and tax took about Rs 22.8 crore, a large share of pre-tax profit. The six-fold jump looks dramatic partly because last year's base was so small.

Where the business comes from

Pine Labs reports two segments. Its Digital Infrastructure and Transaction Platform, which covers in-store and online payment acceptance for merchants, brought in Rs 531.6 crore, about two-thirds of revenue. The Issuing and Acquiring Platform, which provides technology for banks and others to issue cards and process payments, contributed Rs 274.6 crore.

Gross transaction value processed on the platform was about $46.5 billion, or roughly Rs 4.45 lakh crore, across about 229 crore transactions in the quarter. That works out to around 25 million transactions a day, up 22% from a year earlier.

The context for investors

Listed fintech stocks have been volatile this month around the new merchant discount rate (MDR) on larger UPI payments. Pine Labs shares fell about 4% on October 8 when reports first suggested the rollout could be delayed (see our earlier coverage). Pine Labs is known mainly for card and point-of-sale payments rather than UPI, so the fee is less central to it than to UPI-heavy peers. Still, it moves sentiment across the sector.

The results suggest Pine Labs is moving from growth at any cost toward steady, cash-generating growth. The next test is whether expenses keep rising more slowly than revenue as it adds merchants and new products. If they do, margins have room to improve. If spending catches up, this quarter's leap in profit could prove hard to repeat.
