Six Debutants as New-Look India Women Lose 0-4 to Russia in Kolkata Friendly

India's women's football team went down 0-4 to Russia in Kolkata on Thursday evening, a scoreline that reflects the gap between the two sides but hides a disciplined first-half display from a heavily rotated, inexperienced Indian line-up.

The match, played at Kishore Bharati Krirangan, was the first of two friendlies between the teams and the first women's international India has ever staged in the city.

How the goals came

Russia, ranked 27th in the world against India's 69th, controlled possession from the start but found it hard to break down a compact Indian block. India's best chance came around the half-hour mark, when Malavika P was through on goal before Russian goalkeeper Natalia Silina rushed out to smother the danger. Lynda Kom Serto also had a sight of goal later in the half.

The breakthrough came in the 40th minute through Iana Sheina, who picked out the bottom corner, and India went in only a goal down.

Heavy rain changed the second half. On a slick surface, Russia pinned India back and their pressure told on the hour. Captain Nadezhda Smirnova's long-range shot skidded awkwardly off the turf, goalkeeper Monalisha Devi Moirangthem could only push it away, and substitute Kira Petukhova tapped in the rebound. Five minutes later Petukhova struck again after India failed to clear their lines. Iana Svistunova completed the scoring in the 81st minute, controlling a bouncing cross from the left before finishing.

A night for new faces

The result matters less than the selection. Head coach Crispin Chettri used the fixture as a trial for his next group of players, handing senior debuts to Babysana Devi Thingbaijam, Malati Munda, Cindy Colney, Shubhangi Singh, Dhurga Perumal and Sibani Devi Nongmeikapam. Monalisha, making her first start in goal and earning her third cap, made several important saves despite the scoreline.

Chettri made a triple change in the 66th minute, bringing on Shubhangi Singh, Priyadharshini Selladurai and Renu, but India could not regain a foothold.

Why it matters

India won the SAFF Women's Championship in June, ending a seven-year wait for the title, but the federation has been clear that the Russia series is about building squad depth rather than chasing results. Facing a side ranked more than 40 places higher gives younger players exposure to the pace and physicality they will meet in Asian qualifying.

The main lesson from Thursday is stamina and game management: India matched Russia for 40 minutes but struggled to hold their shape for the full 90 once conditions worsened. Chettri will want a tighter second-half showing when the teams meet again on October 11.
