Pranavi Urs Wins India's First Women's Golf Gold at Asian Games as Team Takes Silver

Pranavi Urs has become the first Indian woman to win a golf gold medal at the Asian Games. The 23-year-old from Mysuru won the women's individual title at Aichi-Nagoya 2026 on Saturday, holding on by a single stroke after a final round that nearly got away from her early.

She finished at 15-under-par 265 across four rounds. Singapore's Shannon Xuan Yin Tan and China's Ruoning Yin tied one shot back at 14 under and shared the silver.

A three-shot cushion gone by the third hole

Pranavi began the last day with a three-stroke lead, but it disappeared quickly. A triple bogey on the third hole wiped out her entire advantage and briefly dropped her to second on the leaderboard.

What followed was the round that won the medal. Rather than chase the lost shots, she steadied herself and made three birdies over the rest of the course to get back to an even-par 70 for the day. On a final day when the chasing pack had every chance to overtake her, that level-par card turned out to be enough.

The recovery is the main story here. A triple bogey this early in a medal round usually ends a leader's chances. Pranavi got all three shots back and still won by one.

India's long wait for golf gold ends

The win ends a 24-year gap. India's only previous Asian Games golf gold came in 2002, when Shiv Kapur won the men's individual event in Busan. No Indian woman had won the event before.

It also improves on India's best recent women's result. At the Hangzhou Games, held in 2023 after a one-year delay, Aditi Ashok came closest by taking individual silver. This time India's top finisher went one place higher.

Aditi and Diksha help seal team silver

Pranavi's score also counted towards the team event, which counts the two best scores from each country. India finished at 14 under for a total of 546, good enough for silver. China took the team gold at 22-under 538, well clear of the field.

Aditi Ashok, India's most experienced professional in the side, shot the team's best round on the final day with a 67. Diksha Dagar struggled to a 77, so the team relied heavily on Pranavi and Aditi on the closing day.

Why the result matters

Indian women's golf has mostly been built on Aditi Ashok's results, including her near-miss at the Tokyo Olympics. An individual gold for a younger player suggests the talent pool is getting deeper. It also gives Pranavi a strong case for selection at future international events, including the next Olympic cycle.

The medal came on what is India's final day of competition at the Games in Japan, with the men's cricket and men's hockey teams also playing for gold on Saturday.
