India Women End 44-Year Wait With Asian Games Hockey Gold, Beating China 1-0

India's women's hockey team are Asian Games champions for the first time since 1982. A single first-quarter goal from Lalremsiami was enough to beat defending champions China 1-0 in Friday's final at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium, and the gold also books India a direct place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

It caps an unbeaten run in Aichi-Nagoya that began with a goal-heavy pool stage and continued with a 2-0 semi-final win over South Korea (see our earlier coverage).

One moment of quality, then 50 minutes of defending

The decisive goal came in the 10th minute. Lalremsiami, playing her 200th match for India, met the ball on her reverse side and drove it into the roof of the net, leaving Chinese goalkeeper Liu Ping with no time to react. It was a fitting way to mark a milestone for one of the most experienced players in the squad.

What followed was a test of nerve. China, ranked fourth in the world to India's eighth, held long spells of possession and pushed hard for an equaliser. In the closing stages they pulled their goalkeeper for an extra outfield player, a gamble that piled bodies into India's circle. India's defence and goalkeeping held firm, and the final hooter brought scenes of relief as much as celebration.

A final that almost did not start on time

The match was scheduled to begin at 3:30 PM IST but was pushed back twice. Live reports from the venue said a road accident had left traffic jammed and a team bus stuck on its way to the stadium. Play finally got under way at around 4:37 PM IST, more than an hour late. If the delay unsettled either side, it was India who adjusted faster, scoring within ten minutes of the opening whistle.

Why this gold matters

The numbers explain how big a result this is. Before the final, China held a narrow 12-11 edge across 28 meetings between the sides, with five draws. They arrived as reigning champions and had not conceded a goal in the pool stage, before getting past hosts Japan in a semi-final shootout. India's last meeting with them, at the World Cup in August, ended 2-2.

India's route here was also notable. The team scored 66 goals across five pool matches, with Deepika the standout finisher; reports credit her with 21 goals over the tournament, including nine in a single game against Thailand.

The result also matters for the Olympic cycle. India finished fourth at Tokyo 2020 but then missed out on Paris 2024 altogether. Winning the continental title removes the stress of a qualifying tournament and gives the coaches nearly two years to prepare for Los Angeles with the berth already secured.

What comes next

For Indian hockey, the focus now moves to the men's team, who reached their own final after beating Pakistan 4-3 in the semi-finals. A double gold in hockey would make this one of India's most memorable Asian Games in the sport.

For the women, the bigger task begins after the Games: turning a single afternoon's breakthrough against Asia's strongest side into a consistent standard against the world's top teams before LA 2028.
