Defence Stocks Rally Up to 10% as Sensex, Nifty Trade Flat on Tuesday
While the Sensex and Nifty spent Tuesday's session largely rangebound, the real action was in a handful of defence counters, where Raymond, Unimech Aerospace and Manufacturing, Apollo Micro Systems and Aequs rallied as much as 10% on heavy volumes.
Defence in focus
The BSE India Defence index climbed 0.86% to 7,942.76, comfortably outpacing the benchmark Sensex's 0.07% gain, as brokerage Jefferies turned bullish on the sector's medium-term outlook. Jefferies pointed to a likely double-digit compound annual growth rate in India's defence spending amid heightened global geopolitical tensions, with private sector players seen growing at more than 20% annually on the back of continued government emphasis on domestic manufacturing.
Individual order books added to the momentum. Raymond, which has diversified into aerospace component manufacturing, now holds an order book exceeding Rs 5,960 crore, with a particular focus on aircraft engine parts. Apollo Micro Systems reported an order book of Rs 1,704 crore as of the June quarter, and continued to see elevated trading volumes through the session on what dealers described as sustained institutional buying interest.
The broader market
Away from defence, the headline indices opened on a tentative front foot. The Sensex opened at 74,901.50 against Monday's close of 74,858.99, while the Nifty 50 opened at 23,454.05 versus its previous close of 23,414.30 — both up less than a quarter of a percent. Softer US bond yields and a pullback in crude oil provided some support, with Brent trading near $101.24 a barrel and US crude around $93.03 a barrel during the morning session.
That support was only partial. Foreign institutional investors sold a net Rs 576.20 crore of Indian equities in the previous session, continuing a pattern of outflows even as domestic institutional investors stepped in with net purchases of Rs 2,797.27 crore, cushioning the market from a sharper decline. IT stocks remained under pressure for a second straight session, with Nifty IT among the weaker sectoral indices as Infosys, Tech Mahindra, Coforge and Wipro all traded lower.
Reading the divergence
The gap between the muted headline indices and the sharp defence rally underscores a market that is increasingly picking winners at the stock and sector level rather than moving in unison. With FIIs still net sellers and global bond yields elevated, broad index gains have been hard to sustain, but pockets of strong earnings visibility and thematic tailwinds — such as India's expanding defence manufacturing push — continue to draw buying interest regardless of the macro backdrop.
For investors tracking near-term index direction, Tuesday's session suggests that stock selection within resilient themes like defence and financials may matter more than a broad-based market call in the current environment.
