NSE IPO Opens: India's Largest Exchange Gets 43% Subscription on Day One
The National Stock Exchange of India opened its long-awaited initial public offering for subscription on Thursday, drawing a healthy 43 percent bid on the first day for what ranks among the largest share sales in the country's history.
Day One Demand Across Investor Categories
The Rs 22,562 crore issue, structured entirely as an offer for sale by existing shareholders with a price band of Rs 1,700 to Rs 1,785 per share, received bids for 3.78 crore shares against the 8.86 crore shares on offer by the end of day one, according to exchange data. Employees led the charge with 96 percent of their reserved portion booked, while non-institutional investors came in at 71 percent and retail investors at 44 percent. The qualified institutional buyers segment, which typically bids more heavily in the closing days of a book-built offer, stood at 19 percent as of Thursday evening. Since NSE's offering is entirely a sale by existing shareholders, the exchange itself will not receive any fresh capital from the proceeds; the money instead flows to the selling shareholders.
Marquee Anchor Investors Line Up
Ahead of the public opening, NSE raised Rs 6,746 crore from 189 anchor investors at the top end of its price band. State-run Life Insurance Corporation of India was the single largest anchor investor, picking up shares worth Rs 400 crore, or nearly 6 percent of the anchor book. Other prominent names in the anchor round included the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, Norway's sovereign Government Pension Fund and asset manager Fidelity, lending the offering an unusually global investor base for a domestic market infrastructure company. At the upper end of the price band, NSE's market capitalisation works out to roughly Rs 4.42 lakh crore.
Financials And What Analysts Are Saying
NSE's revenue from operations came in at Rs 16,601 crore for the financial year ended March 2026, down from Rs 17,141 crore a year earlier, while profit after tax fell to Rs 10,302 crore from Rs 12,188 crore over the same period, as operating margins moderated from the highs of the previous fiscal year. Brokerage views on the issue have been mixed: Religare Broking assigned a neutral rating, pointing to the exchange's dominant market position and long-term growth prospects but flagging valuation and regulatory concerns, while some analysts noted NSE trades at a lower price-to-earnings multiple than rival BSE despite generating higher revenue and profit. The issue remains open until September 21, with allotment expected on September 22 and a tentative listing date of September 24, placing NSE's debut alongside a broader wave of large Indian IPOs this year, including the widely anticipated Jio Platforms listing expected before year-end.
